Planar Chip Inductors

Ion Beam Milling manufactures Planar Chip Inductors using either polished quartz or alumina substrates that exhibit a very high dimensional uniformity for bias injection and tuning in microwave amplifier, switch, and multiplier applications.

Features of Ion Beam Milling’s Standard Line of Inductors:

  • Gold Thickness up to 6 microns (240 micro-inches) for high Q, 1.8 GHz performance
  • Lines and Spaces down to 10 microns (400 micro-inches)
  • Ion Beam Miller’s vertical etch process insures chip-to-chip and lot-to-lot repeatability
  • Ti/Pt/Au on both sides, which allows for high temperature attachment and applications
  • Polished Quartz (.015 thick) with very low loss tangent and dielectric constant for 18 GHz applications.
  • Ion Beam Milling offers three standard parts listed in the table below.  Custom inductors are available ranging from 1 to 20 turns.  Please see the Custom Products Section for more information.
  • Standard sizes of .025”x.025”x.015” are available from stock.  Sizes down to .012” x .012” are available in three to four weeks.

Planar Chip Inductors are offered as individual items or can be purchased in assorted quantities through one of our convenient engineering kits.  Please contact us for pricing and details.  Inductors are usually available within 2 weeks of order.
 
Ion Beam Milling offers the following thin film gold Planar Chip (Spiral) Inductors deposited on polished quartz as standard products.  In addition to the standard parts listed below, Ion Beam Milling can also fabricate a custom Planar Chip Inductor using your design.  Please see our custom section for details.

Test Data compiled on quartz substrates of 0.025” x 0.025” x 0.015”.  Parts above can be ordered on alumina by substituting an “A” for the “Q” suffix in the part number above.

In addition to Ion Beam Milling’s line of inductor products, on September 9, 2008, Ion Beam Milling and Piconics entered into a partnership agreement under which Ion Beam Milling is the sole producer of Piconics’ Planar Inductor line.  Piconics products can either be ordered through the traditional Piconics Sales Channel or else directly through Ion Beam Milling. 

Since 1963 Piconics has produced a range of coil inductors.  More information about these products can be found on their website

Piconics SP Series is a thin film gold spiral inductor depositied on a ceramic or quartz chip.  This style inductor can be used where low inductance values and gold wire bond is the interconnection method.

  NOTES:

  1. Inductance values are measured in free air.
  2. Mounting the part on a ground plane will reduce the inductance and SRF. Higher values change more.
  3. If part must be mounted on a ground plane it is best to purchase part on a thicker material. Piconics can supply up to 25 mil thick on special order.
  4. Attachment is best made with non-conductive epoxy. Using a conductive epoxy will yield the same result as mounting on a ground plane.
  5. Only thermosonic wire bonding using 1 mil gold wire is recommended.
  6. Bonding pads are .004" diameter min.
  7. SRF values are measurements based on 10 mil substrates.
  8. Electrical data applies only to non-gold backed chip inductors. Consult the factory for electrical data when ordering gold backed inductors.
